A letter with white powder was sent to Prince Harry and his fiancee Meghan Markle, the Evening Standard newspaper reported on Thursday, saying it was also believed to contain a racist message.

The paper said that officers from the Metropolitan Police’s counter-terrorism command were called in after the letter was received on Feb. 12 at a sorting office in St. James’s Palace in central London.

But analysis of the powder found that it was harmless.

Contacted by AFP, Prince Harry’s press service at Kensington Palace declined to comment on the report.

“Police are investigating after a package containing a substance was delivered to St. James’s Palace on Monday, 12 February,” police said in a statement.

“The substance was tested and confirmed as non-suspicious. Officers are also investigating an allegation of malicious communications which relates to the same package,” the statement said.

The Evening Standard said police were believed to be examining whether the incident was linked to a package containing white powder that was sent to the British parliament on Feb. 13.

The couple are due to marry in Windsor on May 19.

When their relationship was first revealed in 2016, Harry issued a strongly-worded statement against media harassment of his mixed-race girlfriend.

Harry’s communications secretary Jason Knauf said at the time that Markle had been the subject of “a wave of abuse and harassment.”

“Prince Harry is worried about Ms Markle’s safety and is deeply disappointed that he has not been able to protect her,” Knauf said then.

Unfair Win, Are Little Mix the Real Winners of ‘Video of the Year’ instead of Harry Styles at Brit Awards?

The BRIT Awards have been hit by fix claims, after fans spotted Little Mix were in the lead for a public-voted gong – but failed to win.

Eagle-eyed fans noticed the girl band had the most votes on the website for British Artist Video Of The Year when the poll closed, but still lost to Harry Styles.

Disgruntled viewers took to Twitter to accuse the results of being rigged, and demand the awards to publish the voting totals as proof.

Twitter users were quick to share screen grabs of the online poll – which clearly showed Little Mix in the lead, while the former One Direction singer was in second, when the vote was seconds away from closing.

Fans could also vote by hashtagging their nominee on Twitter, and the girl band had been trending worldwide all evening.

Confused as to how Harry reigned victorious, many disgruntled voters accused the BRITs of rigging the vote, and demanded an explanation.

One kicked things off by writing: ‘Wow, @LittleMix got robbed. They had the most votes on the #BRITs website for ‘British Video of the Year”… but yet, here they are with no award. RT if you think @LittleMix should boycott the show unless an apology and explanation is issued.’

As others shared photos of the vote, with the captions: ‘I refreshed the page and we were still in first place, if we lose this then the brits are rigged’ and ‘The Brits have some explaining to do.’

Others claimed the awards show had been ‘robbing’ the band, formed of Jade Thirlwall, Perrie Edwards, Leigh-Anne Pinnock and Jesy Nelson, for several years – despite them being one of the best-selling girl groups of all time.

The girls hold four UK number one singles and the record for the highest first week UK album sales for a girl band since the Spice Girls.

The band also missed out on a nomination in the Best British Group category, which several viewers claimed was an outrage itself.

One wrote: ‘So you’re just gonna use Little Mix to promote the show every year and then straight up rob them of every award EVERY SINGLE YEAR? Is it a tradition now?’

Not happy: Confused as to how Harry reigned victorious, many voters accused the BRITs of rigging the vote, and snubbing the girl band for years

Others agreed, adding: ‘The simple fact is that this is not the first time the Brits have snubbed or robbed little mix. Jacks joke about any former member of one direction winning should have said it all when little mix won every round before the night’

And: ‘Little mix were robbed of what they bloody well deserved considering 2017 was their year. but they still didn’t win which just proves that brits are rigged.;

While a Harry Style fans chimed in: ‘I love Harry with all my heart and he really deserved this, but why was Little Mix on the first place on the website then.

‘The Brit robbed LM for years now. I guess they don‘t like a girl group breaking records. I‘m on Little Mix‘s side before Brits come up with an explanation.’

Weighing in: Leigh-Anne’s mother Debbie even got involved in the backlash, and demanded numerical proof of the Two Ghosts hitmaker’s win in a string of furious Tweets

Leigh-Anne’s mother Debbie even got involved in the backlash, and demanded numerical proof of the Two Ghosts hitmaker’s win.

She wrote in a string of furious Tweets: ‘What the f**k sorry but this was a fans vote and @LittleMix were ahead @BRITs please explain.

‘#BRITAwards2018 no not having this @LittleMix robbed how?? They were leading the vote.

‘Started and ended at first place with almost 250K tweets with the hashtag trending worldwide. If they don’t win the show is definitely rigged then – Show us results

Debut: The band did appear onstage, but only to present Stormzy with his award (above)

‘Mixers let’s not leave this I want the fans votes published and I want to see how Harry won.’

MailOnline has contacted a representative for the BRITs for comment.

Little Mix and Harry Styles were up against a number of big names in the Video Of The Year category, including Dua Lipa, Liam Payne and Calvin Harris.

While he was not present at the awards, Harry wrote on Twitter after his win for Sign Of The Times: ‘Thank you to everyone who voted for me at the @BRITs tonight. I appreciate and love you all very much. H.’

Absent: Harry did not attend the ceremony, but thanked his fans on Twitter for their support after he bagged the gong (pictured last month)

Cheryl teased that she and boyfriend Liam Payne enjoy a wild sex life when she was interviewed during the live TV broadcast of the BRIT Awards on Wednesday evening.

Despite mounting speculation over the status of their relationship, Cheryl, 34, and 24-year old Liam looked smitten as they attended the music extravaganza at London’s O2 Arena, but some were left wondering if it was all a stunt.

And the couple were enjoying the start of the show at their table when host Jack Whitehall decided to pick them out for an on-air interview for the ITV viewers at home.

Awkward: Liam Payne and Cheryl were forced into an awkward exchange with BRIT Awards host Jack Whitehall as the event kicked off at London’s O2 Arena on Wednesday

Referencing Liam’s upcoming performance on the night of Fifty Shades Freed soundtrack song For You, Jack cheekily referenced the erotic thriller’s S&M theme.

‘You’re performing later, the song from the Fifty Shades film, it’s going to get quite racy… is there a safe word?’ he asked.

Liam then motioned towards Cheryl, saying, ‘She knows what the safe word is,’ to which the former Girls Aloud star added: ‘Don’t stop!’

It was a rare joint appearance by the couple since the birth of their baby son Bear 11 months ago, and comedian Jack, 29, asked: ‘How’s date night going so far?’

‘Going great so far,’ Liam responded, as Cheryl looked on silently. ‘We’re having a good time.’

Under pressure: The couple, whose brief relationship is thought to be under increasing strain, looked visibly uncomfortable as the comedian made a beeline for their table

Cheeky: Referencing Liam’s upcoming performance on the night of Fifty Shades Freed soundtrack song For You, Jack cheekily referenced the erotic thriller’s S&M theme

Banter: Addressing the couple directly, Whitehall – who was hosting the event for the first time – playfully asked, ‘How is date night going?’

Mischievous Jack then asked the pair to wave to their “little man” home – 11-month old son Bear – and as they did as instructed he cracked a joke about Liam’s diminutive band-mate Niall Horan, adding: ‘Hello Niall!’

Though their overzealous behaviour – amid claims that the two-year romance would be over ‘within weeks’ – cast some doubt on the relationship again, when friends told The Sun that the love-fest was ‘just a stunt’.

A source told the publication that Liam and Cheryl were attempting to hide their relationship woes with an overzealous display, just days after they were plagued with rumours of an impending split.

Duet: As Cheryl watched her man in action, Liam and Rita Ora took to the stage to perform at the glittering awards gala

Eye-catching: Rita stepped out in eye-catching style, displaying her shapely frame as she took to the stage in a white bodysuit

The insider said: ‘Cheryl and Liam’s friends say things aren’t good between them and have made it clear their relationship will soon end.

‘But with a single to promote, Liam was not going to miss the opportunity, and having Cheryl with him gives him even more limelight.

‘They are trying to work things out and want to be together for their son Bear’s first birthday next month. But things are very strained.’

Representatives for Cheryl and Liam have been contacted for comment.

And, as Cheryl watched her man in action, Liam took the stage with Rita Ora to perform their sexy Fifty Shades Freed song, For You.

For You: They put on the show’s penultimate performance, singing their track For You, from the Fifty Shades Freed soundtrack

High five! After belting out the concluding notes of their sultry track, a smiling Rita raised her hand to high-five a happy Liam

Hug it out: As their duet came to an end, the pair shared a friendly hug – amid raucous cheers and applause from the audience

But the singers kept their duet considerably tame, opting to forgo any suggestive gyrating or raunchy moves as they kept a fair distance between themselves during their performance.

However, as their duet came to an end – and Liam responded to Rita’s high-five with a hug and a peck on the cheek – host Jack Whitehall joked: ‘ITV hasn’t seen that much sexual chemistry since the Trump-Morgan interview.’

Earlier that night Liam and Cheryl smiled and cuddled each other as they posed for the photographers lining the expansive red carpet leading into the venue.

Stepping out together: Cheryl and Liam stepped out together for the BRIT Awards, held at London’s O2 Arena on Wednesday night

Former Girls Aloud singer Cheryl hit the big musical event in style, stepping out in a black zibeline Jean-Louis Sabaji minidress, which featured laser-cut plumes enveloping the neckline and cascading down one arm to incarnate a sleeve.

Standing tall in a pair of black heels – which featured large red rose embellishments – the Fight For This Love singer wore her raven tresses in a sleek ponytail.

With glittering earrings serving as her main accessories, the former X Factor judge highlighted her natural beauty with a rich palette of richly-hued makeup.

Cheryl and Liam were seen joining singers Sam Smith and Jessie Ware at the afterparty, following their unexpected appearance on the red carpet together.

The former X Factor judge was seen making a funny face at Liam as they posed for the cameras, as they continued to dispel rumours of a split.

Also making an appearance at the bash was Liam’s One Direction bandmate Niall Horan, following a very awkward joke about the trio during the awards show.

Giggle: The pair laughed and whispered in each other’s ears as they posed for photographers

Whispering sweet nothings? The former Girls Aloud singer gazed at her beau as they spoke

White rose: Cheryl arrived holding a long-stemmed white rose, in solidarity with Time’s Up

Cheryl is thought to be spending much of her time at home on her own with Bear, because she would rather stay in watching TV than go out to showbiz parties.

The source said: ‘Cheryl basically went into hibernation when she got pregnant and has made the decision to be a stay at home mother with no nanny and is looking after Bear herself. She doesn’t like going out much as she used to.’

While another friend close to the couple added: ‘The fact of the matter is, like most young couple’s with busy work lives and the demands of an infant they have been struggling to spend time together.

Liam also put on a dapper display himself, arriving at the celebratory gathering in a powder blue double-breasted blazer, which he wore over a black polo shirt.

Teaming his threads with black trousers, he added a further casual touch to his look with the addition of a pair of black running shoes.

It was a surprise to see the duo looking so smitten, following days of speculation that the relationship would be over ‘within weeks’.

Yet their overzealous red carpet PDA, coupled with pictures showing them fawning over each other during ‘private’ moments backstage, cast some doubt over whether their behaviour was genuine.

Affection: Cheryl and Liam stole affectionate glances at one another as they posed up a storm

Parents’ night out: The pair left their 11-month-old son Bear at home for their night on the town

She’s got sole! Standing tall in a pair of black heels – which featured large red rose embellishments – the Fight For This Love singer wore her raven tresses in a sleek ponytail

‘But with a single to promote, Liam was not going to miss the opportunity, and having Cheryl with him gives him even more limelight.

‘They are trying to work things out and want to be together for their son Bear’s first birthday next month. But things are very strained.’

Their social media coverage of the rare date night was extensive. Liam took to Instagram to earlier in the day to share a brief video of himself.

He said: ‘Hi everybody… I am just getting ready for the BRIT Awards. We’ve just done a rehearsal and it’s gone really, really good. It’s gonna be nice performing with Rita [Ora] again and you’ll see me.’

He also uploaded footage of him and Cheryl posing together on the BRIT Awards red carpet, followed by a boomerang clip of him greeting his rapper pal Stormzy.

But he saved the best for last, uploading self-shot footage of himself and Cheryl posing together backstage as they sung along to a track, before she was seen relaxing on a couch next to her beau and lovingly stroking his nose.

It was revealed just the day before that Cheryl has planned to attend the awards ceremony with the father of her only child – as it was announced that he would be taking to the stage to perform with Rita Ora.

Dapper display: Liam also put on a dapper display himself, arriving at the celebratory gathering in a powder blue double-breasted blazer, which he wore over a black polo shirt

Packing on the PDA: Their PDA-heavy display was the first time the couple had been seen showing so much public affection since their relationship came to light

Casual touch: Teaming his threads with black trousers, he added a further casual touch to his look with the addition of a pair of black running shoes

No trouble here: Any indication of an imminent split was brushed aside during their latest public appearance on Wednesday

It’s there in black and white: After the couple walked the red carpet, Liam took to Instagram to share a black-and-white shot of them making their arrival together

According to The Sun, the singer knew she would be seeing Liam cosying up to Rita onstage, but wanted to put on a united front with the former One Direction heartthrob after being left ’embarrassed’ by the split rumours.

The One Direction crooner and Rita, 27, are set to belt out their hit For You at the bash – the raunchy lead single for new flick Fifty Shades Freed.

While Cheryl is thought to prefer spending time at home with their son Bear, a source has revealed she attended the bash with her boyfriend, in order to show her support in the face of split claims.

For real? The couple’s romantic display claim as sources told The Sun newspaper that friends believe their PDA-fest is ‘just a publicity stunt’

Stars together: Cheryl and Liam posed up a storm with fellow singers Sam Smith and Jessie Ware

Look who it is! Liam and Cheryl also reunited with his One Direction co-star Niall Horan, who was at the butt of a hilarous joke during the awards show

Not so awkward! Luckily the trio seemed to be in good spirits following the awkward awards show moment

Trouble in paradise? Sources have claimed that Liam and Cheryl’s PDA-fest is front, as they desperately try to dispel rumours of a split

Genuine? The source said: ‘They are trying to work things out and want to be together for their son Bear’s first birthday next month. But things are very strained’

United front: Cheryl, 34, and boyfriend Liam Payne, 24, were seen putting on a loved-up display once again as they attended the BRITs Universal Music afterparty on Wednesday night

An insider told the paper: ‘She knows everyone will be talking about her and Liam, and she’s really embarrassed about the whole thing.

‘It doesn’t help that Liam will be on stage singing a pretty sexual song with Rita that will get everyone talking.

‘But she also knows if she doesn’t attend it will be taken as a sign she is not supporting Liam.’

It has been implied that Cheryl is jealous of the amount of time Liam has been spending with Rita during promotion for the single – something her representatives firmly denied.

Pose: Liam also shared footage of the couple playfully posing together ahead of the big show

Funny face: The former One Direction heartthrob pulled a funny face as he and Cheryl mouthed the words to a song together

Shoulder: Cheryl rested a hand on her man’s shoulder as they posed up a storm together ahead of the anticipated show

Playful: Pop singer Cheryl also appeared to be in a playful mood as she shared some rare screen time with her boyfriend

Liam and Cheryl’s representatives were contacted for comment.

It was claimed last week that the couple’s romance was in trouble, less than a year after they welcomed their first child.

The new parents are reportedly struggling to find quality time together as they juggle their busy careers and care for their 11-month-old son, Bear, a source told MailOnline.

The insider claimed their relationship is ‘strained’, as the former One Direction star is spending nights away from home and touring the world with his solo album, while she looks after their baby son.

Nose: In more footage, Cheryl played with her beau’s nose as they relaxed together on a couch

Resting on his lap: She sat with her legs stretched out across Liam’s lap during the rare public display of affection

Relaxed and happy: The stars looked relaxed and happy as they cosied up to one another in the private VIP area

How cute: A member of the stars’ entourage was heard saying ‘awww’ as Cheryl brushed Liam’s nose

‘There are the very real strains of trying to adapt to parenthood whilst being in the spotlight and having to appear as though everything is rosy all of the time

Staying strong: The singer reportedly knew it wouldn’t help to see Liam cosying up to Rita Ora onstage (above), but wanted to support him after being left ’embarrassed’ by split rumours

Close friends: The source added, ‘It doesn’t help that Liam will be on stage singing a pretty sexual song with Rita that will get everyone talking’ (pictured with Rita last month)

‘It is not real life and is not the life Cheryl and Liam are currently living as a couple.’

It was also reported by The Sun that Liam has spoken to lawyers to see what a split would mean for their shared assets and the care of their son – with Liam holding an estimated £54million fortune, and Cheryl around £20million.

However, the Fight For This Love hitmaker was quick to hit back at the split rumours as she launched Cheryl’s Trust Centre on Tuesday.

Following days of speculation, BBC presenter Dan Walker touched upon her love life life at the launch, but a slightly frosty Cheryl appeared keen to deflect discussion away from her relationship.

Close: The couple remained by one another’s side throughout the whole evening and were spotted leaving the afterparty some time later

Keeping him close: The couple held hands as they put on a united front to head home

Touching: Cheryl wore roses on her shoes, which is the same design as the tattoo that she and her boyfriend both have inked

Doing their thing: The couple both looked immaculate in their designer get up as all eyes were on them

Showing his love: Liam had a white rose badge pinned on his jacket in support of the Time’s Up movement

Happy: Liam wore a big smile on his face as he led his lady to the car

She said: ‘(Talk of my personal life) is not frustrating. It doesn’t bother me at all as my focus is solely on this and I’ve waited seven years and none of that matters – this is most important to me.’

Liam then went on to praise Cheryl for her philanthropy, with a gushing comment on one of her Instagram photos.

The Bedroom Floor is joining a number of high-profile performers at the bash, including Dua Lipa, Ed Sheeran and Justin Timberlake – who was seen enjoying a night out in London on Tuesday night.

The event was hosted by comedian Jack Whitehall, who gave insight into the goings-on backstage on Good Morning Britain, ahead of the bash.

On the rocks: It has been claimed the pair are set to split after spending much of their time apart – with Liam travelling the world, while Cheryl is at home caring for son Bear

Distance: The insider claimed the former One Direction star is spending nights away from home and touring the world with his album (above), while she looks after their baby son

‘Struggling to spend time together’: Meanwhile Cheryl is thought to be spending much of her time alone at home with Bear, because she would rather stay in than go out to showbiz parties

Speaking to Richard Arnold on Wednesday morning, he joked: ‘I walked past Stormzy getting a pedicure. I wondered what that was! His feet were amazing though. Incredible, beautiful feet!’

While he is excited to front proceedings, the Bad Education star admitted he is still nervous about fluffing up his words and jokes.

‘I’m slightly apprehensive about it and worried because obviously it’s the Brits and it’s one of those things where you go, ‘Oh what can go wrong?’ – I mean, so much could go wrong,’ he added.

The BRITs will also see the music industry come together for a performance in tribute to the 22 victims of the Manchester attack at Ariana Grande’s concert last May.

‘You put your heart into such a great cause’: Liam then went on to praise Cheryl for her philanthropy, with a gushing comment on one of her Instagram photos

Catherine Zeta-Jones panicked James Bond fans on Tuesday when she took to Instagram to say she was thinking about the ‘amazing’ actor.

The film icon posted a picture of herself starring alongside Sean Connery, 87, in the 1999 film Entrapment with the caption ‘thinking of this amazing man today, such wonderful memories and friendship’.

Catherine’s, 45, caption seemingly came out of the blue for fans who subsequently filled the comments section with concern for the 87-year-old’s welfare.

‘Did something happen?’: Instagram users were quick to ask if Connery was alright, and were relieved when the Chicago star set the record straight

Her post even prompted some worried fans to ask if Sean had died, with one saying, ‘Did something happen?’ and another asking, ‘Everything okay with him?’

The Chicago star – who has two children, Dylan, 17, and Carys, 14, with husband Michael Douglas – explained that she was ‘just thinking of her co-star Connery today’.

Retired actor Sean was last pictured out and about in the Big Apple with Micheline Roquebrune, his 88-year-old wife of 42 years, in September 2017.

He was using a cane to support himself and now appears to rely on an attentive caregiver.

At the US Open in August, he is believed to have suffered a fall but he was unhurt, save for a bruise on his face.

‘The bruise was from a fall,’ a representative explained to the Daily Express in August. ‘He is absolutely fine.’

Connery had been rarely seen before June 2017, but had put on a surprise public appearance at the Open – where he had received a standing ovation from the crowd, as the the James Bond theme tune played out across the stands.

Yet Catherine captured Connery in his heyday, sharing a snap from the film that they worked on together.

In the picture, Sean is stood behind Catherine as she is resplendent diamonds and wears a black dress.

Welsh beauty Catherine, who first found fame in The Darling Buds of May, is now living in New York.

He broke his social media silence in order to praise partner Cheryl’s charity work amid growing concern for their future as a couple.

But Liam Payne was without the Fight for This Love singer as he made an appearance at the Gagosian Gallery in London on Tuesday evening.

The 24-year old was instead joined by DJ and clothing designer Virgil Abloh, whose collaboration with Takashi Murakami was on display at the Davies Street venue as London Fashion Week drew to a close.

Sporting a casual T-shirt beneath a Balenciaga jacket, Liam looked typically relaxed as he posed for photos shortly after making his way inside.

Ripped skinny jeans added to the low-key look, while Nike high-top trainers and a series of distinctive gold neck chains rounded things off.

Earlier that day the One Direction star expressed his pride for his girlfriend on Instagram after she launched Cheryl’s Trust Centre, in aid of disadvantaged youngsters, in her native Newcastle on Tuesday.

Side by side: The 24-year old was instead joined by DJ and clothing designer Virgil Abloh, whose collaboration with Takashi Murakami was on display at the Davies Street venue as London Fashion Week drew to a close

He deemed her an inspiration and questioned ‘how she finds the time’ for philanthropy, after it was claimed she mostly stays at home to care for their son Bear while Liam works away – driving the pair apart.

Cheryl, 34, shared a snap of herself posing in the new welfare centre, which led Liam to gush of his support in the comments.

He wrote beneath the beaming snap: ‘Very proud of you! how you find the time to do this I’ll never know.

‘Over many years you’ve put all this together and put your heart into such a great cause! I hope one day I can do the same.’

Speaking out: Liam has broken his social media silence to praise Cheryl’s charity work, amid swirling rumours the pair are set to split

On the rocks: His post comes amid rumours the pair are set to split after spending much of their time apart – with Liam travelling the world, while Cheryl is at home caring for son Bear=

‘You put your heart into such a great cause’: Liam sent his support, in his first post on social media since split rumours emerged

Her close pal Kimberley Walsh also commented on the photo, adding: ‘This is amazing so proud of you’, followed by a love heart emoji.

The comment saw Liam break his social media silence, amid swirling rumours he and Cheryl have parted ways.

Struggling: A source told MailOnline last week the new parents are struggling to find quality time together as they juggle their busy careers and care for their 11-month-old son, Bear

‘There are the very real strains of trying to adapt to parenthood whilst being in the spotlight and having to appear as though everything is rosy all of the time.

‘Struggling to spend time together’: Meanwhile Cheryl is thought to be spending much of her time alone at home with Bear, because she would rather stay in than go out to showbiz parties

Happier times: The pair have been together since late 2015, and welcomed their first child in March last year

‘It is not real life and is not the life Cheryl and Liam are currently living as a couple.’

It was also reported by The Sun that Liam – who is set to perform at the inaugural Global Awards next month – has spoken to lawyers to see what a split would mean for their shared assets and the care of their son – with Liam holding an estimated £54million fortune, and Cheryl around £20million.

However, the Fight For This Love hitmaker was quick to hit back at the split rumours as she launched Cheryl’s Trust Centre on Tuesday – the achievement Liam was praising on Instagram.

Following days of speculation, BBC presenter Dan Walker touched upon her love life life at the launch, but a slightly frosty Cheryl appeared keen to deflect discussion away from her relationship.

She said: ‘(Talk of my personal life) is not frustrating. It doesn’t bother me at all as my focus is solely on this and I’ve waited seven years and none of that matters – this is most important to me.’

If you are rocking up to a party in a Dee by Dalia design – expect to be the center of attention. You are the woman dancing under the glitter ball – you are the one sprinkling a bit of stardust as you move around the room – you are the one everyone wants to get to know – because you seem to have a kind of “happiness field” around you that draws people in.

That’s the feeling that Dalia El Ali’s London Fashion Week collection inspired. You could feel the energy in the room when the models sashayed down the catwalk at Fashion Scout held in the imposing art deco setting of the Freemasons’ Hall in Covent Garden.

El Ali’s collection was presented by Dubai Design & Fashion Council (DDFC) in partnership with FAD Institute of Luxury, Fashion & Style Dubai (FAD Dubai). The DDFC X FAD Dubai fashion initiative sponsors the participation of Emirati and UAE-based designers to showcase at London Fashion Scout, the leading independent platform at London Fashion Week. The initiative is offered exclusively to DDFC members and combines the Council’s efforts to foster the development of a sustainable fashion industry in the UAE and MENA region.

Backstage El Ali counted down the minutes to her first ever showing at LFW. She said she felt both nervous and excited but she looked as though she was really enjoying the atmosphere.

You get the impression that she is a person with a strong core identity who knows what she wants and has the talent and confidence to make it happen. Curiously, her background was not fashion at the outset, but finance.

“I studied finance at American University of Beirut, worked in investment banking for six years, and then left my job to spend time with my two lovely boys. I began dabbling as a stylist for shoots for local magazines and websites but despite all that, I still felt that I had not reached where I wanted to be, so I took things to the next level. I studied fashion design at the London College of Fashion and I finally did it! I started my own line of clothes in 2013.”

Her line is all about fun, playful pieces with a twist reflecting her own personality and style. You can detect influences of the 1960s and 1970s in her designs and the AW 18 collection features her own print for the first time.
“This collection is inspired by astronomy, positive energy and women’s empowerment. I’ve included references to the ‘Me Too’ and ‘Time’s Up’ hashtags to raise awareness of these issues,” she said.

El Ali was impressed by the high level of organization at Fashion Scout. Certainly everything seemed to run like a well oiled machine with models being put through their paces as they rehearsed before each show and an army of make-up artists and stylists working to create the special “look” for each collection. It’s an intense, creative whirlpool behind the scenes but once the lights go down it’s a polished, seamless performance.

“All the people here are so experienced and know exactly what they are doing. Fashion Scout is very professional and gives designers a great platform and it’s really enjoyable because it’s so diverse,” said El Ali.

Asked about her fashion influences, she said: “From the Arab world — Queen Rania of Jordan. She is so elegant – even when she goes for a funky look she pulls it off in an elegant way. She is very classy. Also, I love Sarah Jessica Parker – she’s a real favorite.”
Asked about her views of the fashion industry within the GCC, she said: “Within the Gulf region, the fashion scene is evolving very fast. Lately, modest fashion is enjoying a high profile and it’s nice to see everyone taking an interest in the fashion of the GCC. Tastes are changing and there is an openness to new designers. Having the Design District in Dubai is also really helpful as it draws all the fashion and talent to one spot.

“DDFC are based in the Design District which is how we met. They have been extremely helpful – they do a lot for designers, from running courses to opening up opportunities with buyers.”

Thomaz Domingues, Senior Manager for Strategy and Industry Development for the DDFC, spoke to Arab News in the run-up to the show.

“We are very excited to have Dalia here. This is our third season bringing our DDFC members here to showcase at Fashion Scout. We have a very well organized and structured selection process and as more and more people become aware of what we are doing, this event is gaining traction.

“The designers who have participated here in London have been able to get some very positive results in terms of new business opportunities and media coverage.
“They all come back to us and give us their feedback and share their experience with other members. It’s a very positive engagement.

“Over the past year, we’ve seen a lot of new designers who are keen to participate. We also have a lot of back up and support from the industry which is also very important – from big international brands who help us to build and run the platforms to local companies and other government stakeholders who back us up.”

Shivang Dhruva, founder at FAD Dubai, said: “This year we’ve had a fantastic response from the media and fashion enthusiasts for the Dee by Dalia showcase. We’ve worked closely with her in evolving her collections and we are making a big collective effort to support the talents from the region.

“This year we have had 54 students flying in from FAD Dubai to support the show in London. They are working backstage, assisting with PR and social media. The idea is to give emerging talent hands on experience in the fashion week. At the end of the day we are not just supporting the designers but the whole community of fashion enthusiasts from the region.”
